PAINT 3D HELP

Paint 3D Not Working? Troubleshooting Guide

Paint 3D may occasionally stop opening, freeze during editing, run slowly, or have trouble creating projects. Use the troubleshooting methods below to identify the problem and get the application working smoothly again.

ISSUE01

Paint 3D Keeps Crashing or Shows an Error

Repeated crashes can be connected to temporary app problems, outdated graphics drivers, or damaged Windows system components. Start with the simpler fixes before moving to system repair.

Update Windows and Your Graphics Driver

  1. Open Settings and select Windows Update.
  2. Check for available Windows updates and install them.
  3. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  4. Expand Display adapters.
  5. Right-click your graphics device and choose Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers, then restart your computer after the update.

Repair Paint 3D from Windows Settings

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find Paint 3D and open its Advanced options.
  3. Select Repair if the option is available.
  4. Open Paint 3D again and check whether the crashing has stopped.
  5. If Repair does not solve the problem, back up important projects before considering the Reset option.

Check Windows System Files

If other Windows apps are also behaving unexpectedly, damaged system components may be involved. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run the following commands.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow

Allow each scan to finish, then restart Windows before testing Paint 3D again.

ISSUE02

Paint 3D Freezes or Stops Responding

A temporary lack of available system resources can make an editing application stop responding, especially when several demanding programs are open at the same time.

Close Unnecessary Background Applications

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Check which applications are using a large amount of memory or CPU.
  3. Close programs that you do not currently need.
  4. Close Paint 3D and open it again.
  5. Test your project before reopening other heavy applications.

Restart the App and Check Windows Updates

  1. Close Paint 3D completely.
  2. Restart your Windows PC.
  3. Open Settings → Windows Update.
  4. Install any available system updates.
  5. Reopen Paint 3D and check whether the same project still freezes.

Use the Windows App Repair Option

If freezing continues after a restart, open the Advanced options page for Paint 3D in Windows Settings and try Repair. Use Reset only after protecting any important project data.

ISSUE03

Paint 3D Is Running Slowly or Lagging

Slow response while rotating models, using effects, or working with larger projects may be related to limited free storage, system load, or graphics performance.

Check Available Storage Space

  1. Open Settings → System → Storage.
  2. Review your available disk space.
  3. Open Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations.
  4. Review the files before removing items you no longer need.
  5. Restart the computer and test Paint 3D again.

Reduce System Load

Close unnecessary browsers, games, video editors, and other resource-heavy applications before starting a larger Paint 3D project. Working with fewer background programs can leave more system resources available for editing.

Check the Display Driver

Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, and check for an updated driver for your graphics device. After installing a driver update, restart Windows before testing the app.

ISSUE04

Paint 3D Projects Are Missing or Cannot Be Found

Before resetting or reinstalling the application, check whether your exported images, model files, or project copies are still available elsewhere on the computer.

Search Your Saved Files

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Check your Pictures, Documents, Downloads, and Desktop folders.
  3. Search for the file name if you remember it.
  4. You can also search for exported formats such as PNG, JPG, 3MF, or GLB.
  5. Check any cloud storage folder you normally use for saved files.

Check Your Backup Copies

Look for copies saved on another drive, a cloud storage service, or a Windows backup location. Restore a copy to a normal folder before opening and editing it again.

Do Not Reset the App First

If your projects have disappeared, avoid immediately resetting or reinstalling Paint 3D. First search for project files and make copies of any important data you can still access.

ISSUE05

Paint 3D Cannot Create a New Project

If the app opens but a blank project cannot be created, test the application with a clean restart and then use Windows app recovery options.

Restart and Test a Blank Project

  1. Close Paint 3D.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Open Paint 3D without opening an older project.
  4. Try creating a completely blank project.
  5. If the blank project works, test your existing files separately.

Repair or Reset Paint 3D

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find Paint 3D.
  3. Open Advanced options.
  4. Select Repair first.
  5. If the problem continues, protect your important project files before using Reset.

Reinstall Only After Other Fixes Fail

Reinstallation should be a later troubleshooting step. Before removing the application, save copies of important exported files and projects that are still accessible.

QUICK CHECK

Before You Try Advanced Fixes

01

Restart Windows and reopen Paint 3D.

02

Install available Windows updates.

03

Check your graphics driver.

04

Make a copy of important project files.
